
The well-known terrorist Abu Salem, India, issued by the Portuguese authorities, admitted his involvement in organizing a series of bombings in Mumbai (formerly Bombay) in 1993, according to the agency PTI on Sunday citing a senior intelligence. One of the "kings of the underworld" of South Asia, Abu Salem admitted that supplied arms and explosives for the bombings in Bombay. As a result of this terrorist act killed about 260 people. According to the source agency PTI, Abu Salem told during interrogations about his involvement in 93 bombings, organized as a terroritorii India and abroad. Portugal on Thursday extradited to India, one of the most wanted persons by the Indian authorities, who previously was suspected of involvement in bombings in Mumbai to in 1993. Abu Salem was arrested in Portugal with his wife in 2002 for forgery and extradited on the condition that he not be executed. In the Indian Penal Code, capital punishment – death by hanging – provides for a number of serious crimes. However, in practice it is used very rarely – as a rule, courts are especially dangerous criminals sentenced immediately to life imprisonment. In this country there is an influential movement for the abolition of the death penalty.
